Waris Dirie

Waris Dirie is a Somalian born Supermodel who suffered the pain and indignity of FGM, she has written several books. the first Desert Flower is the autobiography of Waris's life growing up in Somalia. Desert Dawn is the second book is about Waris's journey into the human rights abuses bought on by FGM and her desire to have the practice outlawed. Her book Desert Flower is a great read, hard to believe that one person could have so much horror in her life. Another book that was worth reading is Nine Parts Of Desire by Geraldine Brooks.

FGM update

Here is a short video explaining the Egyptian governments new approach to stopping the practice of genital mutilation. This is not a religious custom it is used to preserve the girls virtue making her a much better marriage prospect. There have been over 100 million women and girls that have been mutilated, and many thousands who die from the procedure.

This occurs in Cameroon to pre-pubesent girls to prevent early pregnancy. Very severe way to contraception, I would have thought it would be easier to provide condoms..........

Well blow me down I have managed to put a you tube video on my blog, cool song that I like not everyone's cup of tea but could be worse. And I have even added a picture........All I can say for that is that it must be very easy to do, even though I'm excited by my efforts.

Julie I am definitely agreeing with you about the http://www.kosmix.com/ web site as it is really good for finding a definition, relevant facts and trusted sources. Great stuff. Also http://www.cuil.com/info/ has been great for references to a few different sites that didn't appear on google or yahoo. I think that I may be getting the hang of this finally although I may be speaking to soon. It is really good being able to share things with each other, those people doing health related topics should check out http://www.intute.ac.uk/ as a resource as i have found it very useful.

Still haven't managed to work out what the GO is for some of the subjects, but hey I'll just leave in the hands of the Gods.......................

As stated earlier I also have a topic to blog about which is a lovely subject of 'genital mutilation or religious rite' it does bring up a lot of angst for people, but I am finding it a most interesting topic considering it has been happening since before the birth of Islam........very interesting indeed.
