Waris Dirie is a Somalian born Supermodel who suffered the pain and indignity of FGM, she has written several books. the first Desert Flower is the autobiography of Waris's life growing up in Somalia. Desert Dawn is the second book is about Waris's journey into the human rights abuses bought on by FGM and her desire to have the practice outlawed. Her book Desert Flower is a great read, hard to believe that one person could have so much horror in her life. Another book that was worth reading is Nine Parts Of Desire by Geraldine Brooks.

Hi, Kelly! Have you also heard of Ayaan Hirsi Ali? She was also a victim of FGM, sought asylum in Holland, and became a member of the Dutch parliament. She is famously anti-Islam. I haven't read either of her books, but they are available at the library, and Infidel, her autobiography, was featured in the Books Alive program this year.
