Waris Dirie

Waris Dirie is a Somalian born Supermodel who suffered the pain and indignity of FGM, she has written several books. the first Desert Flower is the autobiography of Waris's life growing up in Somalia. Desert Dawn is the second book is about Waris's journey into the human rights abuses bought on by FGM and her desire to have the practice outlawed. In the column of this blog there is link called FGM info and the will take you to the many sites that I found on this topic and also the link to an interview with Waris Dirie about her life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojRYxEseWa0
Her book Desert Flower is a great read, hard to believe that one person could have so much horror in her life. Another book that was worth reading is Nine Parts Of Desire by Geraldine Brooks.

FGM update

Here is a short video explaining the Egyptian governments new approach to stopping the practice of genital mutilation. This is not a religious custom it is used to preserve the girls virtue making her a much better marriage prospect. There have been over 100 million women and girls that have been mutilated, and many thousands who die from the procedure.

What a shame the governments haven't heeded this warning, no truer words have ever been said by a politician.............

Quote of the Week 'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.' Thomas Jefferson 1802

A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
